Royal Scottish Academy letter to Walter P. Rawley, Esq, from (Sgd) Henry Hastings, dated Aug 21, 1939. Dear Sir, In reply to your letter of 8th August, I have pleasure in intimating to you that the Artist about whom you write - George F. Hargitt, 56 Queen Street, Edinburgh - exhibited Paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy between the years 1854 to 1866. There is a record of 54 of his works having been exhibited here during that period. The titles of these works would indicate that he was principally a landscape painter, although there are one or two subject pictures. About the same period there was an Edward Hargitt who resided at the same address (possibly a brother) who contributed quite a number of works to the Academy's Annual Exhibitions between the years 1851 and 1862. Yours Sincerely, (Sgd) Henry Hastings, Assistant Secretary |
